PHF Science: New Zealand's Public Research Organisation

PHF Science is New Zealand's Public Research Organisation dedicated to enhancing the health, wellbeing, and safety of our communities. This new facility features a dynamic innovation hub alongside 1,500m² dedicated to cutting-edge laboratories and a forensic services centre.

Designed by Warren and Mahoney’s Wellington studio and led by Associate Principal Catherine O’Hare and her team, the building was inspired by the raw kawakawa plant and features a roofline that supports rainwater harvesting and solar energy generation.

The facility prioritises sustainability with systems to monitor emissions and promote energy efficiency. The project has achieved a 5-Star Green Star Design & As Built NZv1.0 Certified Design Review rating – the first laboratory building to be Green Star certified in New Zealand. The building’s solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and electric vehicle charging stations help reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. Material selection focuses on reducing embodied carbon, while biophilic interior design principles enhance occupant wellbeing. Designed for future flexibility ensures the facility can easily adapt to evolving scientific needs.

The roof and wall buildups played an important role in supporting the project's low-carbon outcomes using ROCKWOOL Hardrock in the roof and ROCKWOOL Rainscreen in the walls. With energy efficiency and major consideration ROCKWOOL significantly lowers heating and cooling demands, boosting the building's operational sustainability and overall environmental performance.
